Freedom School

Freedom School by artist Parris Stancell is located on the border between the Fairmount and Brewerytown neighborhoods in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural is painted as a tribute to some of the great Civil Rights leaders in the United States: Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Fredrick Douglass and Ella Bakers, the founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Above the four leaders who never stopped taking a stand is a quote from Ella Baker stating “We who believe in freedom cannot rest.” This important message continues to resonate.
