About the Project

Starting in December 2014, students participating in our After School Education Program at The Lenfest Center in Hunting Park began exploring the generative power of art and science with artist Benjamin Volta.

Inspired by the new Your Brain exhibit at The Franklin Institute and through hands-on experiments with educators from the Institute, the students developed interesting and beautiful positive patterns.

The resulting mural, which includes the painting talents of Philadelphia Science Festival attendees and Dow Chemical Company employees, displays the interpretative workings of the brain as seen by the students, drawing from a trial and error exploration in pattern making and pattern recognition. Frequencies is a result of a collaborative process, with every student contributing to its making and composition.
