From the Mountains to the City

From the Mountains to the City is one of a series of murals from Shira Walinsky and Miriam Singer on 7th and Emily Streets that came out of a project celebrating the diversity and resilience of new immigrants from all over the world, focusing on South Philly’s growing Bhutanese and Burmese communities. The mural and wheatpaste designs were inspired by the textiles and stories of the refugee communities, and include woodblock prints of collages made by community members. The project is a result of a partnership between the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disability Services, and the Philadelphia Refugee Mental Health Collaborative. Read more about some of the refugee population in Southeast Philadelphia in the Mural Arts book My Future Starts Here.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (covered by adjacent construction ca. 2021).
