Harmony

Harmony by artist Tomie Arai is painted on the exterior of the Chinatown Learning Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is adapted from the traditional Asian folk art painting A Thousand Children Playing. This mural features a group of children from multiple nationalities standing hand in hand in a circle around a central design of flowers. The bottom portion of the painting is a memory shelf, a tradition Asian folk art piece, in which children from the community painted their favorite toys or objects to create a permanent recorded memory. This mural through its imagery depicts one of the goals of the Chinatown Learning Center as it teaching about Chinese culture and the culture of Philadelphia. The title of the mural a reference to how the children of every generation are the stewards of community wholeness and harmony in our world.
