History of Puerto Ricans in America

History of Puerto Ricans in America was designed by Barbara Gesshel and painted by Alvino Pearson, Dietrich Adonis, A. Davies, and M. Carter, It is located in the Norris Square neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Composed of brilliant colors reflecting the topical nature of the island of Puerto Rico, this mural features images from the history of the island. From initial contact with Europeans, to parrots, baseball, and Indigenous heritage this mural serves to recognize that Puerto Rico is not just a place off the coast of the United States but a place of vibrant culture. A culture that has been transported to places like Philadelphia, as Puerto Ricans settle across the continental US creating spaces where all can come together and learn from the islands history.

Originally created in 1991 by the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network, it was restored by the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program in 2001 and again in 2014.
