Inspirations

The design of Inspirations by artist Cesar Viveros was based on quotes discussed with students at the City of Philadelphia Youth Study Center. This led to study of ancient mythology, from which the students produced drawings and ideas that inspired the design. The wall was divided into three stages: at the far left there is a narrative of the phoenix bird who immolates itself to be reborn into a new life. From there, a swirl of images progressively show stages of the cycle of life and how life passes by in front of our life while we decide how to take the best of it. It also remarks the fact that no matter how many mistakes we make because we can always learn from it and start all over. The middle segment on the mural shows the images of a mythological monster that we all should conquer because this one represents all the weakness of the human spirit that do not let us move forward as could be fear, insecurity, etc. – a monster within us that we can conquer. The last image on the mural is about building a community together.
