La Borinqueña

Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Art Education students and La Borinqueña creator Edgardo Miranda Rodriguez teamed up to create this mural dedicated to the spirit of nature and the preservation of our planet. La Borinqueña, located in the Norris Square neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an image that celebrates the power and heritage of Puerto Rico via women historically on the island and here in the U.S.

Rodriguez’s La Borinquena is a new and original comic creative book character that has grown into a cultural phenomenon and a nationally recognized symbol of Puerto Rican patriotism, social justice, and equality for all. Rodriguez worked with the students of Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Art Education Department. They studied La Borinquena’s universe and added specific elements to the mural design. The mural was created in partnership with the Providence Center.
