Language Lab

Language Lab is a mural by artist Shira Walinsky located in South Philadelphia. As an artist and educator, Walinsky works with the Porch Light Program to address the mental health and wellness of individuals and communities in Southeast Philadelphia, in partnership with the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services. This mural is a comment on the multilingual nature of South Philadelphia. There are over 30 languages spoken at the local Furnace high school. Language Lab celebrates this diversity on a background resembling a geometric weaving. Hopefully, as you wait for the bus, you might learn a new word in Lao, Thai, Khmer, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, or Karen.
Participating Community Partners: Lutheran Children and Family Services, Refugee Mental Health Collaborative.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (lost to demolition/construction ca. 2019).
