Liberty Classic

The site chosen for Liberty Classic, designed and painted by artist Eleanor Grosche in summer 2019, is at the end of Main Street in the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, under the regional rail trestle at Leverington Avenue. It’s a popular corridor for cyclists leaving the metro area to climb Umbria Street and ride less crowded roads. Conversely, it’s a welcome turn that means soft pedaling on level roads back into the city. It is also a few blocks away from “The Wall,” an iconic punchy climb that was part of the numerous professional bike races that took place in Manayunk over the years (names varied based on race sponsorship). At one time, that route was part of the U.S. National Championship race, which, uniquely, featured a men’s and women’s pro race that ran concurrently. In honor of those races, these murals are titled “The Liberty Classic” and “The Philadelphia International Championship.”
