Look Beyond the Prize

Look Beyond the Prize by Kien Nguyen is located in the gymnasium of the Juvenile Justice Services Center (JJSC) in the West Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Focusing on the themes of scholastic achievement, perseverance, and athleticism, the mural was designed to appeal to adjudicated students involved in after-school programs at the JJSC.

The mural features male and female world-class athletes from basketball, baseball, boxing, gymnastics, football, hockey, lacrosse, and track and field arranged around a centerpiece of three Olympic gold medals. Interwoven throughout the imagery is a ribbon of text with a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that reads: “Do not go where the path leads. Instead, go where there is no path. and leave a trail.”
