Math in Time
Philadelphia-based artist Oluwafemi collaborated with students from Thomas K. Finletter Academics Plus School to create artwork inspired by mathematical concepts. During the residency, Oluwafemi introduced students to geometric pattern-making grounded in mathematical principles, guiding them through explorations of contour line drawing and tessellations. The resulting mural design reflects the students’ learning and creative experimentation. A version of the mural will be installed in the school’s mathematics wing at Finletter, located in the Olney neighborhood of North Philadelphia.
Math in Time is rooted in the history of mathematics, measurement, and human innovation. The design draws inspiration from the Ishango Bone, considered one of humanity’s earliest mathematical tools, with markings believed to represent prime numbers and lunar cycles. Additionally, Oluwafemi used compositional elements based on the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence, further reinforcing themes of pattern, growth, and mathematical beauty.
About the Artist
Oluwafemi is a rhythmist based in Philadelphia and originally from Lagos, Nigeria. He explores how our lives embody and reflect the universal phenomenon of pattern and repetition. His visual and musical work spans deejaying, music production, pen illustration, painting and digital video art. He blends influences from hip-hop, mathematics and African culture in deejay sets, drawings, projection art and murals experienced throughout Philadelphia and beyond.
