Migration Nation

Migration Nation by Shira Walinsky represents the rich textile traditions of new refugees and immigrants from Sudan, Iraq, Philippines, and China who are now living in Northeast Philadelphia communities in the vicinity of the Max Myers Recreation Center. The mural surrounds the swimming pool with a bright collage of textiles representing these diverse groups. Cloud patterns from China intersect with Islamic inspired designs.

The mural evolved from inspiration of a series of projects with these communities since 2012. ELS classes, poetry and other workshops, and public art sessions centered on personal adjustments after coming to Philadelphia.
