North Philadelphia Community Mural (Health Partners)

This North Philadelphia community mural sponsored by Health Partners and painted by artist David McShane was located in the Lower Tioga neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Health Partners is a subsidized healthcare provider that serves economically disadvantaged families and neighborhoods in the area. Health Partners felt a mural would be the best way to advertise their services to the residents of North Philadelphia. McShane had just finished painting the nearby Portrait of An Anonymous Young Man (since destroyed by fire) and decided to try and incorporate actual families and neighbors that he had met while working on that mural. The subjects in the mural and background patterns symbolize that each person or family is a part of the fabric of the whole neighborhood and each person in the mural supports and is supported by the community. The artist organized a children’s day and the children, many who were depicted in the mural, helped paint the bottom portion of the mural.
