Passion Flower

Passion Flower by artist Paul Santoleri (and restored by Santoleri in 2006) is located in the West Powelton neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Santoleri incorporates a generic aerial view of Philadelphia with a huge passion flower, inspired by a trip he too to the Dominican Republic into this mural. He added botanical images to counterbalance the geometric shapes of the buildings giving the mural an organic flow. Parts of the flower as well as the glass along the bottom and in the tiles are children’s mosaic pieces created in after school workshops. The passion flower is intended to represent the dynamic quality of communities–the interaction of people, and the unpredictable and often beautiful ways in which communities can bloom.
