Peaceable Kingdom

This mural was painted as part of the Peaceable Kingdom Public Murals and Community development projects, a collaboration between the Mural Arts Program and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). PAFA sponsored a mural to be painted based an updated version of Edward Hicks’ Peaceable Kingdom. The mural was painted by Hick’s great, great, great grandson, Charles Hankin (located at 10th and Clearfield). A call then went out to the community to create 99 Peaceable Kingdom murals. Muralists, community groups, and children were asked to consider Hick’s message and create their own image of peace.
Here Parris Stancell creates his version of Peaceable Kingdom. The figure on the right represents Mother Nature seeding the earth with the flower of life with a tree growing in her hand and water and earth represented on her breastplate. The father figure is saving the man on the bottom left. The man at the bottom left with the blindfold has been blinded by the negativities he has seen in his life. The father’s eyes show determination, the mother’s eyes sorrow, the daughter’s suspicion, and the baby’s eyes optimistic joy.
