Pepper Middle School and Family

Pepper Middle School and Family by artist Jared Bader was painted on an interior wall of the George Wharton Pepper Middle School (now closed) in the Eastwick neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sader described the mural in his artist statement:

“I worked with a class of around 25 sixth and seventh graders to develop a theme and imagery that highlighted elements of the middle school and the surrounding community. Elements of the school included sports, reading, and visual/creative arts. The surrounding community included the airport, nearby nature reserve and the recent housing developments. The mural also highlights the diversity of people living in the area. The general composition of the mural includes a student throwing a football creating a path toward the middle school banner and to the airplane. The airplane symbolizes a reaching towards higher goals. The entire mural is arranged in blocks of monochromatic colors visualizing monochromatic complementary and analogous color schemes that were part of the lesson plan of the class.”
