Pomegranates & Paint Shards

Pomegranates and Plate Shards by artist Sammy Kovnat is located in the Queen Village/Southwark neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mural is inspired by identity, intergenerational trauma and healing. As Kovnat explains: “I am named after my grandfather who was a wallpaper hanger and creator of the National Wallpaper Hangers Guild. In my personal art practice I make and sell mosaics created with broken fine china, exploring ideas of healing through experiences of fracture. To be a person who holds a namesake is to live with the invisible, yet ever present, stories of another complex life lived. In highlighting domestic symbols of plate shards and wallpaper in public space, my goal is to help people find for themselves a healing path to learn how to talk about, as well as move through, the complex overlay of past stories and trauma, to facilitate personal growth.”
