Painted basketball courts aren’t just interesting to look at—they actually have a positive impact by increasing both the overall and diversity of usership as compared to traditional basketball courts. New user types are attracted to painted courts. More families are out there. Young women and girls, who feel welcome and safe, are playing in these spaces.

Ordinary paint for a court mural can’t be used. Acrylic paint designed specifically for athletic courts using a much grittier aggregate and thicker viscosity than house paint is required. It is applied with squeegees rather than rollers. MAP uses a special formula with enhanced durability produced by Sealmaster. It was first tested and used on the 2018 Waterloo Playground court.
