Salsa Shines Through

Salsa Shines Through is is an interactive mural project that celebrated salsa dancing as self-care in the age of social distancing. “Salsa shines” is the term used to describe the footwork performed when dancing solo. Instructors use “salsa shines” to warm up before a class and when performing a dance routine. Prompted by social media dance challenges, local dancers submitted videos of themselves dancing safely during the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020. The videos were posted on Instagram at Salsa_Shines_Through and their still photos were used to make the mural design.

Featured dancers include: Amy Harris, Watson St. Suine, Katherine Miller, Esther The, Priscilla Ruilova, Esther Michelle, Kelly Bachovichin, Darlin Garcia, Jose Maldonado, Nyasha George, Kaila Perez Vega, and Andres Giraldo.

The mural is located near the Estilo Dance Studio in Philadelphia’s South Kensington neighborhood.
