The Healing Power of Music

The Healing Power of Music by artist Parris Stancell is located in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural combines both paint and mosaic to create its design. The mosaics team built the arch around the mural as a mythological gateway to time and space for the viewer. Imbedded in the glass is the mural’s name: “The Healing Power of Music.” At the top left, is a triumphant figure raising a hand toward the sky.
The mural prominently features musicians focused on a heart as it comes alive radiating light beams. The blue symbolizes contemplation with evolving emotions. Birds spiral around the embracing couple at the top center of the mural. While a toddler peers from behind the male figure in total delight.
At the left, a bent male figure in green holds his ailing baby hoping to benefit from this healing music as he knows that music not only heals the ailing heart but also can nurture the spirit and therefore the body. A women in a green dress is playing the lyre, symbolizing the poetic nature of the universe. The girl in the red dress playing the flute represents divine love.
