The Lady from South Philadelphia

The Lady from South Philadelphia by artist Nicholas Conrad Miller is located in interior of the Marian Anderson Recreation Center in the Southwest City Center neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mural pays tribute to Marian Anderson, the famed African American contralto opera singer and one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century. The mural depicts Anderson in a variety of poses against an opera house backdrop and wearing a variety of dresses. A central panel with a flower commemorates Anderson’s performance at the Lincoln Memorial on April 9, 1939. Miller created the mural in collaboration with the Marian Anderson Recreation Center and The Marian Anderson Historical Society.
