The Watchers

The Watchers by artists Randy Bullock designed by Vanise Clay is located in the Francisville neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural is on the side of the building housing Project HOME headquarters (renamed the Christopher J. Seward Residence in 2024). Project HOME is a non-profit organization serving chronically homeless and low-income persons. The acronym stands for Housing; Opportunities for Medical Care; and Education.
Project HOME selected a drawing by a resident, Vanise Clay, to be the subject of the mural. Robert Bullock worked from Clay’s original drawing which was drawn with markers. Clay said she wanted the picture to have a feeling of peacefulness. The faces are “watching over and taking care of what they see,” thus the title, “The Watchers.”
The mission of the Project HOME community is to empower adults, children, and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, to alleviate the underlying causes of poverty, and to enable all of us to attain our fullest potential as individuals and as members of the broader society.
