Threads of Joy: Celebrating the Golden Years by artist Kelley Prevard is located at the Ann Thomas Presbyterian Apartments in Southwest Philadelphia. This radian mural captures the color, energy, and beauty of aging with purpose. From dancing and gardening to shared laughter and painted memories, months of storytelling and artmaking with the residents through community events and art club sessions shaped every detail.

The artist described the meaning and symbolism of the mural in an Instagram post:

“Wall one features an elderly woman bursting with vibrancy and life, challenging ageist stereotypes. Colorful patterns stitched around her mimic the sun’s rays. She looks joyfully up at the Sankofa heart symbolizing the importance of learning from the past to build a better future. The scene on her shirt celebrates Philadelphia’s iconic block parties, fostering community across generations.

“On the second wall, a hand holds a sewing needle and thread, symbolizing the power to mend, stitch and bring us together. The intricate patterns inspired by nature represent the growth and evolution of individuals as they age.

“The third wall showcases portraits of Ann Thomas residents enjoying their passions, dancing, playing and celebrating life. Monarch butterflies grace the scenes, symbolizing transformation and the beauty of aging gracefully.
