Tree of Life

Tree of Life by artist Shira Walinsky and Joe Brenman is located in the West Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The central image of the mural is a cypress tree and vines inspired by Isnik tiles, a type of tile originally manufactured in Turkey. Within the tree’s trunk are place names from around the world. To the right of the main panel is a smaller stained glass mosaic of a peacock, a bird that is a symbol in many cultures.

The mural’s design represents the diverse patterns of the neighborhood where it was painted with elements showcasing the vibrancy of other countries like India and Pakistan. Intercultural Family Services is located across the street from the mural. This organization helps many immigrant communities in the city.

Location Note: Murals no longer on view at this location (lost to demolition in 2024).
