Tribute to Grover Washington, Jr.

Tribute to Grover Washington, Jr. by artist Peter Pagast is located on Broad Street in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Grover Washington, Jr. grew up in Buffalo and his love of music began as a child. As a teen, he left Buffalo to play in the MidW est and was later drafted into the army. He played in the Army band and a fellow band member introduced
him to several prominent musicians from New York and Philadelphia. He met his wife, Christine, in Philadelphia. His mix of jazz and rhythm and blues soon made him a legendary musician, composer, and performer, and one of Philadelphia’s musical ambassadors to the world.

The artist based this mural on several pictures of Grover Washington sent by his family. Grover’s wife, Christine, feels that the artist did an excellent job in capturing the artist’s emotion and facial expression while making music.
The mural was restored in 2015.
