Tribute To Miles Mack

Miles Mack was a founder, mentor and coach of the *X-tra Miles Development Basketball League. Tragically, Mack was gunned down at a basketball tournament in September 2008 while trying to shield one of his players from gunfire during an awards ceremony for the league. According to police reports Mack was not the intended target. After the shooting the City renamed McAlpin Playground at 36th and Aspen streets in his honor.

Artist Gabe Tiberino has created murals honoring Mack at this site: Xtra Miles in2010 and Tribute to Miles Mack in 2012. He worked with neighborhood youth to design, paint and install the murals which included their poetry. The murals were designed for the community as a call to action to end violence in our city.

The murals were restored in 2021.
