Tribute to the Church of the Redeemer

Tribute to the Church of the Redeemer by artist Burton Dodge is located in South Philadelphia. This mural represents the community that was formed in and around The Church of the Redeemer, a Baptist congregation located near the site of the mural. Founded in 1966 the church has been active in the Philadelphia community conducting outreach, volunteering at food pantries and educating young congregation members for close to 60 years.

The mural depicts the programs, services, ministries, and missions the Church of the Redeemer provides to the community. The programs illustrated in the mural are: the food bank, prison outreach, Girl Scouts, Toys for Tots, Rights of Passage for Teens and the church choir. Homeowner Mabel Woodards applied for a mural honoring her pastor. The Community Murals team encouraged her to expand this concept to include the many ways the Church interacts with the neighborhood. Pastor Crofts (depicted at left) and Bishop Jesse McClay (depicted at right) are pillars the community and church and, through their vision, are helping many underprivileged people. A young woman in a yellow shirt holds up a book and looks at the viewer, conveying how learning and knowledge can allow us to transcend our limitations and attain new levels of accomplishment.
