Untitled

This untitled mural by artist Steve Powers honors immigrants, reflects the community and cultural life of Philadelphia and more specifically, the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. It was originally created in two-parts, with the related mural located at 1728-40 Sansom Street.

This mural, which was removed in 2022, rose about two stories and included many references to Philadelphia and Rittenhouse Square history, including:

-Mütter Museum, Philly’s famed medical history museum

-Frank Furness, one of Philadelphia’s most notable architects

-Project HOME, the nationally recognized non-profit that provides housing, opportunities for employment, medical care, and education to homeless and low-income persons in Philadelphia

-American composer and Curtis Institute alumni Leonard Bernstein

-Nina Simone, who famously auditioned for, but was not accepted into the Curtis Institute. “[Nina] was rejected, not because of her skill, but because she was black,” explains Nina’s daughter in a 2015 Philadelphia Magazine article.

Location Note: Mural is no longer on view at this location (deaccessioned in 2022).
