This untitled mural by artist Claudia Walde (aka MadC) in the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is part of Reading Between the Lines (RBTL) a project developed by Mural Arts Philadelphia to highlight some of the core design elements – color, line, value, pattern, and typography – that are inherent in graffiti art. Through classroom, and on-site interventions with professional artists, youth learn the theory and application of these design elements.

Classroom activities yield downloadable fonts, creation of kaleidoscopes, designing jean jackets and many more fun activities. Youth also learn the cultural context of the birth, and development of graffiti.

This is one of three murals yielded by RBTL. Each piece focused on design elements mentioned above. Additional programming included collaboration with artists Lady Pink, Mags, Claw Money, Dan 1, Samuel Meyerson and Karma.
