Untitled [Orleans Technical College]

This untitled interior mural by Serena Saunders celebrates the work JEVS has done for the community. It is located in the break room at JEVS Orleans Technical College in Northeast Philadelphia. The organization requested artwork that was inspired by their mission of providing technical and vocational education to adult learners. The overarching theme that inspired the mural’s design is “continuous improvement.” The adults taking classes begin at a more mature place and eventually grow into skilled professionals through their training. The artwork uses nature to convey the stages of growing through the seasons as it travels across the walls of the room. The large windows allow the design, which includes elements of ground and sky, to flow seamlessly. Also illustrated within the design is the concept of the supportive work environment that the school seeks to provide. This is shown through the metaphor of seeds being planted and provided with what they need to grow. The final mural panel depicts the idea of these newly cultivated skills being applied in the career field.
Location Note: This mural is inside a school building, and therefore not accessible for public viewing.
