Welcome Gate mosaic project at 10th & Cecil B. Moore

This welcome gate mosaic was created by artist Mike Smash with youth in Philadelphia’s Anti-Truancy program. Students, led by Smash, created this colorful entryway that included mosaic stars, globes and swirls, along with the word “welcome” at the top. It was installed on a fence near the intersection of North 10th and Cecil B. Moore Avenue in North Philadelphia. Though it was not maintained, the project remained at the site (heavily graffitied) until 2023, when it was lost to development on the site.
