Welcome to Conwell

Welcome to Conwell by artist Lisa Kelley is located inside the main entrance of Russell Conwell Middle School in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As the title suggests, the mural was designed to welcome students and staff as they enter the the building and make the transition into the school day. The mural design was created in a three-step process of engagement. First, students worked with staff to make a list of
elements they wanted to see in their new school mural. Next, Kelley took the list and created two designs. Finally, the school organized a vote to select the winning design. The final design included elements from the students, like the butterfly and flowers, as well as overall feeling of a story book. The students also asked for something “bright, enchanting yet bold” and lively, feelings reflected in the mural’s final color palette. The saying “Welcome to Conwell” was also requested by the student body.
