White Poppies of Peace

White Poppies of Peace is an interior mural located at Horace Furness High School in Philadelphia’s Pennsport neighborhood. Teaching artists Sarah Kolker and Tai Baucom led a group of students in Mural Arts Philadelphia after-school program to create a mural based on topics chosen by stakeholders at the school: Nature, Diversity, Unity, and Community. Students in the program brainstormed and created designs and color drafts. From the three main topics a new word formed: “PEACE.” In this design the white lilies (with accents of colors) are representative of peace within diversity and unity of community. The pattern in the background was originally created as moving through children playing in the park, but was simplified, with the intention to bring nature inside.

Location Note: This interior mural is located inside of a school building and is therefore not available for public viewing.
