Wissahickon Station

Wissahickon Station by David Guinn is a representation of the Wissahickon neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with its beautiful synthesis of built environment and the iconic Wissahickon park. It is 200 feet long, covering a section of the northbound platform at Wissahickon station on the Norristown line. It can be seen from the Schuylkill Expressway and identifies the Wissahickon neighborhood to the thousands of divers who pass by on the expressway every day. Septa was a strong partner on the project.

The design of the mural features several specific elements from the neighborhood: the Ridge Avenue Bridge; the original Frank Furness-designed Wissahickon Station; Victorian houses on Sumac Street; a locally well-known rock formation in the Wissahickon Valley; and Wissahickon Creek. The design grew out of two community meetings held in summer 2015. Guinn was also inspired by historical photographs of the area. The mural was painted directly on the station walls and took five weeks to complete.
