Art as Advocacy: Amplifying Voices and Democracy in the 2024 Presidential Election

In times of political and social uncertainty, the role of art in public spaces becomes more crucial than ever. As we navigate a world where the future is increasingly unpredictable, the mission of Mural Arts Philadelphia gains new layers of significance.

In an article published in the January/February 2024 issue of The Atlantic, David Frum painted a stark picture of the potential challenges our society could face in the near future. He discussed how, under certain political conditions, “the United States would be too paralyzed by troubles at home to help friends abroad,” and the “government cannot function with an indicted or convicted criminal as its head.” As we approach the upcoming US presidential election, these words remind us of the importance of safeguarding our democratic values, especially in times of political and social uncertainty.

For 40 years, Mural Arts has recognized the power of art to reflect and respond to the times. Our murals are not merely beautification projects; they are dialogues with the community, embodying the voices, hopes, and concerns of the people.

Frum warned of a scenario where democratic norms could be undermined if certain actions, such as self-pardons, become normalized at the highest levels of government. His cautionary words serve as a reminder that safeguarding the integrity of our institutions requires vigilance and collective action. This potential for the erosion of democratic norms underscores the importance of our work in promoting civic engagement through art. Our murals are canvases for conversation, fostering a space where ideas can be exchanged freely and respectfully.

In the face of potential challenges to the rule of law and constitutional order, the role of public art in preserving and promoting democratic values becomes even more vital. Art is a tool for advocacy, a means to educate, and a way to stimulate the local economy. It transcends political divides, uniting communities in shared experiences and dialogues.

Our mission at Mural Arts to “Beautify. Inspire. Empower.” is not just about creating visually appealing spaces. It’s about inspiring action, empowering voices, and fostering community. We believe in the power of art to transform not just walls but lives and communities. In uncertain times, this mission becomes a beacon of hope and resilience.

As we look towards the future, whatever it may hold, Mural Arts remains committed to its role as a unifying force in our community. We stand dedicated to creating art that speaks to the heart of societal issues, promotes dialogue, and builds bridges across diverse communities. Our work is a testament to the strength and resilience of our city, and it will continue to be so, no matter the political landscape.

German theatre practitioner, playwright, and poet Bertolt Brecht once said, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.” As we approach election day, we encourage all to acknowledge the power of art in times of change. Mural Arts will continue to serve as a platform for artistic expression and community engagement, using our metaphorical hammer to reinforce the pillars of democracy through the universal language of art.
