Ellen Powell Tiberino Icon Billboard

The most recent installation of the Icon Series features artwork by Ellen Powell Tiberino and Ellen Tiberino on billboards at 52nd and Lancaster Avenue. Ellen Powell Tiberino is known for her diverse body of work, primarily focused on figurative and expressionist art forms. Her pieces often depicted the experiences and history of Black people, with a particular emphasis on women, portrayed in rich, haunting hues that conveyed depth and emotion. Her impact extends to contemporary artists, including her daughter, Ellen Tiberino, featured alongside her in this installation, who continues to contribute to the vibrant artistic landscape of the city.

Ellen Tiberino’s selection for the Icon Billboard Series is a testament to her significant impact on the contemporary art scene in Philadelphia and beyond. Her unique approach to stained glass mosaic art and deep connection to her hometown has solidified her status as an iconic figure in Philadelphia’s cultural landscape. As the final installation in the series connected to the 2024 (Re)FOCUS citywide exhibition, Ellen Powell Tiberino and Ellen Tiberino exemplify the legacy of women and female-identifying artists as iconic Philadelphians and community leaders in the fine arts.

Mural Arts is grateful to Smalls Museum Consulting (SMC) for their curatorial vision; the exhibition Feminist Focus: Fifty Years of Women’s Art in Philadelphia at Moore College of Art and Design (2024); partner organizations, Clear Channel, Fleisher Art Memorial, the Tiberino Museum, and the Woodmere Art Museum; and the artists: Brittany Baum, Edith Emerson, Dara Haskins, Violet Oakley, Wanda Payne, Ellen Powell Tiberino, and Ellen Tiberino.
