Mural Arts Month, Week One
Mural Arts Month 2018 is a go! We can’t believe it, but we’re rolling into our first full week of thought-provoking public events. We’re keeping our energy up with plenty of berries and cream Mural Arts Month donuts from Federal Donuts—available at all FedNuts locations October 1 through October 8! One dollar from every donut sale goes to our Art Education program.
If you’ve been watching the Portraits of Justice mural installation at the City’s Municipal Services Building, join us on Friday for the kick-off event—where the artists will start “erasing” parts of the interactive mural and replacing them with creative solutions to issues in reentry. If sustainability is more of your jawn, our Art of Sustainability symposium next Saturday is for you. And if you love art, technology, and music (who doesn’t?) head out to Barnes on the Block: Remix on Sunday, October 7 for our Mural Arts Month opening party.

Dedication: Weaving Culture with Basurama

Dedicate planters and seating made out of recycled desks with artist collective Basurama, as well as a series of colorful mini-murals inspired by the interconnecting cultures of South Philadelphia.

Portraits of Justice Opening with Poet Reginald Dwayne Betts

The Portraits of Justice initiative culminates in October, starting with a kick-off performance from poet and Reimagining Reentry Fellow Reginald Dwayne Betts in front of a mural from artists Jesse Krimes and Russell Craig.

Barnes on the Block: Remix (Mural Arts Month Opening Party)
Barnes Foundation, 20th and Callowhill Streets
Barnes on the Block, sponsored by Target, returns to join up with Mural Arts Month for food trucks, dancing, and a beer garden in the Barnes parking lot. Guests can enjoy music from DJs King Britt and Rich Medina, plus Drum Like a Lady leading a drum cypHER featuring DJs Aura and Precolumbian. In a first for Mural Arts, we’re creating an augmented reality mural experience inside the Barnes! Plus, muraLAB continues inside the Barnes with a discussion from artists King Britt, Joshua Mays, Walé Oyéjidé, and Jill Is Black on the topic of legacy, from the conceptual to the practical.
