In Living Memory: Those of Us Alive

In Living Memory: Those of Us Alive by artist John Lewis was located in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural is one of four anti-smoking murals completed in 2003. This one represents the dangers of secondhand smoke. The largest figure is a man blowing smoke, attracting our attention because of his disregard for those around him. The smaller pictures are of a pregnant woman, children, and other people who are the most vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke.

At the mural dedication ceremony, members of Full Circle Theatre, an intergenerational theatre group based at Temple University, taught guests a rap they had created especially for the occasion to reinforce the message:

“Second hand smoke is no joke. You smoke, we choke.”

Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (covered by construction ca. 2013).
