The Stories of Olney

The stories of Olney by artist Winnie Sidharta Ambron is located in the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mural depicts the diversity, brilliance and vision of the people of Olney. Included within are familiar faces that contribute to the neighborhood’s rich culture, along with scenes of joyful communities in nature, sharing food, and enjoying time with one another. The main composition references Afro Caribbean quilts, Korean Bojagi, and Laotian, Khmer, Thai and Vietnamese woven textiles, while the border displays distinctive architectural structures that people love and associate with the place
they call home. The mural is a testament to the healing power of culture, nature, music, sports, dance, food, festivals, and so much more. In essence, the mural is a celebration of daily life.

This is the third in a five-part mural series celebrating Philadelphia’s AAPI communities. The Stories of Olney specifically looked at solidarity between Black and Asian neighbors.
