Symone Salib Project at 444 North 3rd Street

Symone Salib is a Cuban/Egyptian portrait painter and street artist based in Philadelphia. Through acrylic paint and illustration, she works to highlight the lives of people of color. She focuses on vibrantly sharing the stories of people in hopes we can connect and resonate with humans who are different from themselves.

Salib visited Mural Arts Philadelphia Art Education classes at Northeast High School in the Fall of 2019 and Samuel Fels High School in the Spring of 2020. Students discussed their culture and history to help decide who has influenced them. Using Salib’s technique, they created self-portraits and portraits of people who have influenced them.

These portraits were then wheatpasted onto two columns in the lobby of 444 N. 3rd St. (an Arts + Crafts Holding building). The students were shown how to make wheatpaste and were part of the installation process. Symone also visited three of Mural Arts Restorative Practices sites: YES Philly, Achieving Independence Center and The Bridge. The work created at these sites was installed in the hallway outside of each classroom.

Location Note: These interior murals may not be accessible for public viewing.
