To Protect and Serve

To Protect and Serve by artist Cesar Viveros is located in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Murals are painted on the exterior as well as the interior of the Philadelphia Police Department’s 22nd & 23rd district headquarters. In February and March 2008 Mural Arts Philadelphia conducted five “Cops & Kids” workshops bringing together 20 youth and 15 police officers from the 22nd & 23rd districts to participate in facilitated discussions to discuss stereotypes, conflict resolution, and youth violence. Through these workshops and community meetings with neighborhood Town Watch members, the theme for this third set of Cops & Kids murals evolved. The group chose a theme reflecting positive interactions between police and youth as well as images reflecting safety and protection.
