Wall of Community Heroes

Wall of Community Heroes was created by the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network in 1991. Located in the Norris Square neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this mural celebrates neighborhood residents’ commitment to gardening. Painted as a series of snapshots framed by bright Afro-Latin-inspired borders, it features neighborhood leaders. Images of ten local residents who lent their strength and spirit to the community are depicted working in gardens, including a maintenance man who cleaned up vacant lots in his free time to women like Tomasita Romero, who showed young people how to garden. The snapshots are set against a backdrop of farmland that is reminiscent of the landscapes of many Latin American countries.
The mural was restored by Kimberly Clark in 2000.
