Kensington Voice Accessibility Project

The Kensington Voice Newspaper Boxes project is a colorful and innovative initiative that aims to promote equitable access to local news and resources for community members in Philadelphia’s Kensington area. The project was developed as a result of community research revealing a need for Spanish-language and print news resources for residents, particularly for those without internet access or English proficiency. To address these information inequities, Kensington Voice installed eight hand-painted newspaper boxes in community organizations within the service area, making it easier for community members to access news, events, and resources each month. – The newspaper boxes are designed to engage and inspire the community through art and creative initiatives such as poetry, art competitions, and scavenger hunts. The Kensington Voice team hopes to expand the project with additional funding, and welcomes tax-deductible donations to support their ongoing efforts and future expansion. – Through this project, Kensington Voice seeks to empower and benefit the lives of community members by providing them with important information and opportunities to better engage with each other, community perspectives, local government, public health information, and resources. The vibrant and colorful newspaper boxes stand out as a testament to the importance of community-driven initiatives that strive for equity, access, and connection.

Location Note: The newspaper racks are located in eight locations around the Kensington neighborhood: Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha (APM), Community Center at Visitation, Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Esperanza Health Center, Norris Square Community Alliance, Prevention Point Philadelphia, The Simple Way, and Taller Puertorriqueño.
