Inheritors of the Dragon

Inheritors of the Dragon was created by artist Mike Smash in the Hawthorne neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The work was created with ceramic tiles, stained glass, and mural paint. Smash worked with students at the Hawthorne Cultural Center as part of the City of Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program’s Artscape Program, which enrolls adjudicated teens in art workshops. The artist chose the dragon theme because he believes that murals should adapt to the surrounding culture of the neighborhood it is in—and this is a predominately Vietnamese and Chinese neighborhood.
