Black Family Reunion / Heavenly Hall

Black Family Reunion is one of two murals commissioned by the National Council of Negro Women. Black Family Reunion at 4022 Parkside Avenue commemorates the NCNW Black Family Reunion Celebration, which celebrates the enduring strengths and traditional values of the African American family.
As Jane Golden explains: “This important mural came about as a result of an idea from Tim Spencer and Barbara Daniel Cox, who was in charge of the Mayor’s Commission on Women under Wilson Goode. I was working with about one dozen former graffiti writers back then. Together we went around and collected old photographs from people to document the history of the family, to both honor and celebrate the African American family.”
The mural was restored in 2001 by Kimberly Clark and again in 2008 by Ernel Martinez.
