Calm Your Mind

Calm Your Mind is a series of nine outdoor figural silhouettes and two indoor banners at Tilden Middle School. This project was done by illustrator and muralist Kah Yangni in collaboration with Tilden students over the course of several classroom visits. The freestanding silhouettes feature photographs of students and are layered with symbols and text crafted by students. They are displayed near the entrance to the school at the intersection of 67th Street and Elmwood Avenue. Integral to this project was students’ creation of positive affirmations to be displayed both on the silhouettes and the banners. Yangni worked with students over the course of their workshops to hone their creative writing skills and select their favorite phrases to be included in the project: “Dreams don’t work unless you do,” and “Don’t live in the past, live in the future.”
