Eric “Hank” Gathers, Jr.

Eric “Hank” Gathers, Jr. by artist Ernel Martinez was located in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Martinez’s work (pictured here) was a restoration of the original mural honoring Gathers created by the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network in 1993.

The mural is a tribute to Hank Gathers, an American college basketball star at Loyola Marymount University who collapsed and died during a game on March 4, 1990. He was the second player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in scoring and rebounding in the same season. He attended Technical H.S. in Philadelphia, which won the Public League City championship in 1985. Hank was only 23 when he died.

The original mural was also restored in 1998.

Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (replaced with reenvisioned mural in 2022).
