Evolution: From Captivity to Freedom

Evolution: From Captivity to Freedom by artist Angela Crafton is painted on the interior of the of the Philadelphia House of Corrections, located in the Holmesburg neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The theme of the murals is the transition of prison inmates from incarceration to freedom. Youth from the Philadelphia House of Corrections participated in the creation of the murals.

The series of three painted walls begins with a man in his old life (a life of crime) standing next to a white police van. The next wall is an inmate lying in a cell which merges into a rainy background. The final wall illustrates life on the outside, the Philadelphia skyline lit by a sunrise. A man in a suit sits on a bench waiting for a bus to lead him into his new life.

Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (facility closed in 2020).
