Oh So Affirmed

Oh So Affirmed is a mural by artist Briana Dawkins located in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mural marks Dawkins’ debut as the lead artist for a Mural Arts Philadelphia project. The project was inspired by the remarkable Saboor Mühammad, a cherished community member tragically lost in May 2021. Requested by the Southwest CDC as a heartfelt tribute to Mühammad, a co-founder of the organization, the mural encapsulates his legacy as a loving family man, a passionate activist, an effective community organizer, and an incredibly successful entrepreneur who once served under former Philadelphia City Council Member Jannie Blackwell. Collaborating closely with Women’s Reentry Program members, Dawkins’ design and painting bursts with infectious optimism and vibrant energy.

Dawkins describes the mural in an artist statement:

“This mural, a heartfelt tribute to Saboor Muhammad, encapsulates his profound influence in Southwest Philadelphia. Initiated through collaboration, my journey began with brainstorming alongside Mural Arts Guild participants, then deepening our understanding of Saboor’s life and impact through discussions with the Southwest Philadelphia District Services. Saboor is celebrated for his unwavering dedication to community upliftment, inspired by the mural’s core message, ‘Oh So Affirmed,’ reflecting the empowerment and support he championed. The artwork is rich with affirmations from the Guild, set against a backdrop of colors symbolizing calm, serenity, and wisdom—traits that Saboor personified. Mandalas interspersed throughout serve as symbols of inner balance and unity, mirroring the harmony Saboor sought in life and community. This mural not only honors Saboor’s legacy but also stands as an enduring source of inspiration, reminding us of the power of affirmation and the importance of community bonds.”
