Southeast by Southeast Pastes

The artist created small, temporary wheatpastes for two buildings along 7th Street (at Dudley and McKean Streets) and in the community garden at 740 Emily Street in South Philadelphia. These are intended as way finders, signifying the Burmese and Bhutanese refugee community presence in Southeast Philadelphia. The patterns within each paste are based on woodblocks and screen prints. They repeat in each paste, with the hope that people will connect the imagery from one paste to the next. Some of the patterns are directly based on refugee textiles, and woodblock designs were inspired by collages the community members made during workshops.
Location Note: Murals no longer on view at this location (painted out ca. 2017).
